This week I sat with my 15-year-old son for 10 hours while he worked on his first math project of the year.
Math is not his favorite subject so I’m not sure how he was able to endure hour after hour. As I watched the clock tick, I knew I would not have persevered at age 15. I always worried about being the best.
The problem with that is, I don’t have control over whether others think I am the best. None of us really do. As a real estate broker, I spent a lot of time focused on client needs and perceptions, sometimes at the expense of doing my best, so that I could appear to be the best in this competitive profession. The good news is we ALL have control over doing our best.
What my son taught me this week is such a powerful equation. If we work at being our best, without worrying about whether others think we are the best, then success is inevitable. Doing one’s best has a magnetism that striving to be the best lacks.
Being the best may be profitable but doing our best is priceless.
